Many changes have taken place since Kookaburra commenced operation in Jan 1997.

Some of the changes have been an increase in seating capacity and more recently the retirement of the 1927 Simplex equipment (2 machines running reel to reel)   for a more modern system of projection featuring a single Century CC machine with Xenon lighting, the latest ACL laser unit for sound reproduction (ready for Cyan tracks) continuos long play capability (up to 3 hours) with an EPRAD double MUT unit and best of all is the Dolby stereo surround sound installation.

An entirely new web page is under construction showing the historical changes with an archives section for the old gear which ran perfectly for 7 summer seasons and never once failed.

Hopefully the newer machine will perform much the same in the future and so far we are delighted with the surround sound.                It really does add an "extra"  dimension to film presentation.

The "newer" machine before threading.           MUT in foreground is in "rewind" mode.

Note, To the left is the new sound rack featuring 4 valve amplifiers all ex cinema amps from "mono" days but utilised for their ability to handle quite severe lightning storms which many solid state units are unable to cope with.

In the past seasons 2 lightning strikes have seen screen speakers "blown" but the valve amps survived and sustained no damage. Output of each is a modest 20watt RMS but combined with quite efficient speakers produce more than enough sound to cope with "full house" situations.

Below is a shot of the crowd building for a session of "Japanese Story" screened over the Australia Day WE (Jan 26). This was taken at 7.15pm and by the time the show was about to start at 8pm we had a very Full House. Japanese Story set a record for attendances at Kookaburra which will be difficult in future seasons to topple. That was a hectic weekend.
