In the early Seventies John developed an interest in jewellery and silverwork. He had some silver coins from the Batavia that were worn to the point of being no more than discs of silver and he had in mind using some to make jewellery. John went to a library and found a book on 'lost wax casting' for jewellery. He had only melted a few before he realized even though they had no inscriptions it was a sacrilege to use them. He learned silver is relatively cheap, and bought it from a bullion supplier. From this beginning he went on to explore other branches of jewellery and silverware. The bowls and goblet (see below) are examples of his silversmithing and the box is the type of work a 'flat hammer-man' would do. |
